When trees converse, the air is charged with chemical substances, fragrances, hormones, and electrical connections. Placing herself in the middle of the conversation, Karen is illuminated by it. This charged atmosphere infuses her with a sense of well-being emotionally, physically, and spiritually. She is surrounded by the empathy that is the forest. In the studio, fiber, paper, and photographs are blended and intertwined into forms and textures she encounters on in the forests near her home in Maine. Her ethereal prints and sculptures illustrate this multi-sensory experience.

Karen Olson has been featured in several online and print magazines and was recently interviewed for her project Wildlight by the Maine Museum of Photographic Arts. Her work has been included in shows such as LA Photo Curator, NY Photo Curator, and the Torpedo Art Center. Several of her images were chosen for the show Behind the Lens-Women in Photography at the Rhode Island Center for Photography. The Griffin Museum of Photography featured Karen’s project Between Two Worlds in a virtual gallery show, her book with the same title was included in the Davis-Orton/Griffin Museum Photobook Show.

PROJECT

WILDLIGHT

“Trees cuddle and stand closely together. They love company and like to take things slow. There is in fact a friendship among trees.”* This friendship is multifaceted. When trees converse, the air is charged with chemical substances, fragrances, hormones, and electrical connections. Placing myself in the middle of the conversation I am illuminated by it. This charged atmosphere infuses me with a sense of well-being, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. I am surrounded by the empathy that is the forest.

The act of sculpting fibers, paper, and photographs into forms and textures I encounter on my walks in the forest recreates this experience for me. It is a reminder of being comforted and companioned. Constructing, deconstructing, and constructing further connects me to the natural cycles of growth and decay. This tactile process literally pulls me in and grounds me, I become an intimate part of the dialog.
*Peter Wohlleben

*All sculputures are pigment prints on Kozo paper, mulberry paper, and natural fibers.
